After hundreds of hours of collaborative work, Awake Spine Surgery has been published as the first comprehensive textbook dedicated to the techniques, evidence, and multidisciplinary considerations of performing spine surgery without general anesthesia.

Edited by Dr. Ernest Braxton of Vail-Summit Orthopaedics, the book brings together leading perspectives from spine surgeons and anesthesiologists to address patient selection, operative strategy, anesthesia protocols, outcomes, and complication avoidance in awake spine procedures.

“With full transparency,” Braxton notes, “this is very much a textbook for orthopedic spine surgeons, neurosurgeons, and anesthesiologists.”

“I don’t expect the general public to find it especially riveting — unless they’re struggling with insomnia,” he adds with a smile. “That said, it represents an enormous amount of work, collaboration, and thought, and I’m incredibly proud to have seen it through to publication.”

As awake spine surgery continues to expand in ambulatory and hospital-based settings, the textbook aims to serve as a practical and academic reference for surgeons and perioperative teams seeking to adopt or refine these techniques safely and effectively.

“Awake Spine Surgery” is available online through Thieme Publishing.
